Compensatory effects preventing SARM1-dependent neuron and axon death (Project Renewed)
The Coleman Lab is investigating a protein, SARM1, whose removal strongly protects nerve cells. Rare mutations that hyperactivate SARM1 are enriched in ALS, while other data suggest wider roles in ALS making it an important drug target. Our data indicate natural mechanisms compensating for active SARM1 to keep cells, and patients, alive for several decades. We aim to identify these compensatory mechanisms so they can be enhanced for new therapies, and modifiable risk factors combining with SARM1 that could be avoided.
