The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research announces the appointment of Jim Halpert to the Board of Governors.
The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins announces the appointment of Jim Halpert to its Board of Governors. “Jim brings talent, expertise, and energy to our fight to end ALS. As an ALS patient, he brings a personal and unique perspective to the Board,” noted Jeffrey Rothstein, MD, PhD, Packard Center founder and director. “We are very fortunate to have his experience and vision and look forward to his contributions.”
Halpert’s background is in cyber and privacy law and he currently serves as General Counsel for the White House Office of the National Cyber Director. Prior to his current role, Halpert spent twenty-seven years at DLA Piper as a partner and co-chair of the global privacy and cybersecurity practice. He was named one of the country’s leading data protection lawyers by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. In July of 2022, Halpert was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and has become an advocate for better funding for ALS research funding and clinical trials. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and Doctor of Law from Harvard University and and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Mr. Halpert is married with two sons and through a life-long friendship with screenwriter Greg Daniels, is the real-life namesake of Jim Halpert, lead character on the NBC hit show, “The Office.”
With the appointment of Mr. Halpert, the Packard Center Board of Governors now consists of 20 voting members, two ex-officio members, and one emeritus member, and is co-chaired by Ralph Terkowitz and Shelby Saer. The Center’s Board of Governors is a group of respected volunteers and philanthropists who are committed to the fight against ALS. In addition to addressing the Packard Center’s ongoing need to raise funds for ALS research, board members advise on strategies that will further advance the organization’s mission.
